How to Choose the Right School Shoes for Kids
Pick school shoes that fit well, support growing feet and last the whole academic year – here's what to check before you buy.

With so many brands and styles on the shelf, it's easy to pick the wrong size or the wrong type of shoe. 1. Get the Fit Right, Not Just the Size
Children's feet grow quickly, but a shoe that's too big is just as bad as one that's too small – it affects balance and can cause blisters. Always measure both feet (one is often slightly larger) and leave about a thumb's width of space at the toe for growth. Where possible, bring your child in for a fitting rather than guessing the size.
2. Choose Breathable, Durable Material
School shoes get worn five or six days a week, rain or shine. Leather and canvas uppers breathe better than synthetic materials and hold up longer under daily use – important for Madurai's heat. A reinforced toe and heel area adds a few extra months of life to any pair.
3. Check the Sole and Grip
A flexible, non-slip sole matters more than it looks. Children run, jump and play through the day, so a sole that bends with the foot and grips well on tile or concrete reduces the chance of trips and falls in the schoolyard.
4. Match the Shoe to the School's Uniform Rules
Most schools in Madurai specify black or white shoes, and some require a particular style (lace-up vs. velcro). Check your school's uniform guidelines before buying, especially for younger children who may need velcro straps for easy independent wear.
